Transformation: Week 1

This originally started out as a daily update, but I decided not to bore you with long notes that I dictated while sitting in SoCal’s infamous morning traffic.  Instead, here’s a recap of my first week back in the gym.

Monday morning was my first day back in the gym.  My job has a free gym, so there’s no excuse as to why I haven’t been using it as much as I should.  I’ve used it several times in the past, but this time around things NEED to be different!  My goal is to go to the gym three days a week (Mon, Wed, Fri). Since the gym opens at 5:30am I figured getting to the gym early would not only be a great start to my day, but it would also help me avoid the ridiculous amount of traffic that I deal with EVERY morning. Sounds like a great plan right? Wrong!

Before I dive into how my workouts actually went this week, what good would this post be if I didn’t do a little bit of bickering about the traffic? I’ll spare the details of the madness this time around but nonetheless, it’s not an ideal way to start the day.  The traffic is unreal at times.  It seems like no matter what time I leave, whether it be early or late, there’s almost ALWAYS traffic.  Good thing I can channel the negative energy from the annoyance of traffic into my workout and cleanse myself of any frustration before I start my workday.  Thank God for the blessing of patience.

Monday was great. It felt good to be back in the gym and pushing some weight around. My workout consists of a full-body circuit that incorporates basic compound movements like deadlifts, squats, and the bench press. After getting such a good workout on Monday I was excited and looking forward to Wednesday. Along with the compound movements, I’m using a progressive overload approach. In layman’s terms, progressive overload is a way for me to gradually increase the weight (each workout) to stimulate muscle growth. So on Wednesday, I got to increase the weight and push myself harder than I did on Monday.

I carried that momentum into Friday and continued with the progressive overload. I wasn’t sure if Friday was going to be the day I would reach my max since I’m just starting, but I feel like I may be able to bump things up a little more come next week. Overall it was a good week, I feel great and looking forward to another week of hitting the gym.
