Golden State Warriors
Steph Curry exploded for 38 points, surpassing Ray Allen as the NBA’s all-time leader in playoff three-pointers mad. DeMarcus Cousins was in action, getting his first taste of the NBA playoffs, pitching in with 9 points and 9 rebounds, while Kevin Durant put up 23 points as the Warriors cruise to a 121-104 victory, and taking a 1-0 series lead over the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Clippers appeared to hold their own getting 25 and 26 from Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell, but it just wasn’t enough to withstand the blows from Warriors and Curry’s epic career night.
The Brooklyn Nets take Game 1 with a 111-102 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the 2019 NBA Playoffs. Stealing Game 1 for road teams is usually a big deal considering it takes away home-court advantage from the higher seeded team.
I haven’t followed the NBA season too closely this season and had no idea the Nets were playing well enough to become a 6-seed. Looks like D’Angelo Russell is panning out to be the point guard we all thought he was, and after his first All-Star season, he carried his Nets to a surprising 1st round win posting 26 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds. Caris LeVert also contributed off the bench with 23 points in 23 minutes.
The Philadelphia 76ers got heavy contributions from Jimmy Butler and Joel Embiid. Butler had a game-high 36 points to go along with 9 rebounds and Embiid had a double-double with 22 points, 15 rebounds. If the 76ers want to regain home-court advantage back they’ll have to get more production out of their young star Ben Simmons and veteran sharpshooter JJ Redick; who combined for only 14 points on 8-16 from the field. Nets lead series 1-0.
DJ Augustin stole the show in this matchup posting 25 points, 6 assists, hitting 4-5 from downtown including a game-winning 3-pointer to seal the deal for the Orlando Magic, giving them a 104-101 win over the Toronto Raptors. Aaron Gordon chipped in with 10 points 10 rebounds; Isaac and Vucevic both added 11 points and 8 rebounds each. The Magic were just 4 Rebs shy of having 3 players post double-doubles.
The Toronto Raptors fought hard to maintain home court advantage getting 25 points and 6 rebounds from Kawhi Leonard but clearly needs more production from point guard Kyle Lowry despite distributing the ball well with 8 assists and grabbing 7 rebounds. Magic lead series 1-0.
San Antonio Spurs
The Denver Nuggets come up short as they are unable to pull out the win losing to the San Antonio Spurs 101-96. Despite having 6 players in double figures and multiple failed attempts the closing moments by star guard Jamal Murray, the Denver Nuggets fold in Game 1.
The San Antonio Spurs, on the other hand, pulled out the win with 5 players in double figures including 18 points and 12 rebounds from DeMar DeRozan and 15 points and 8 rebounds from LaMarcus Aldridge. Spurs lead series 1-0.
